During 2017’s biking season, RIU will be spot-lighting our favorite rides and races.  These are well supported, soul-filling, scenic and often support a great cause!  Below are the first events coming right up in March and April.  If you haven’t already, it’s time to dig your gear out and get training!

Whether you are a die-hard cyclist or are thinking about getting into this fantastic sport, read on and find a race or ride then get signed up!  Many of these have short distances perfect for the beginner along with much longer distances designed for more hard-core cycling.

Skinny Tire Festival - RIU Crew's Featured 2017 Bike Rides March/AprilSkinny Tire Festival (Road) – Moab, Utah – March 11-14, 2017

Join road cyclists from around the country for four days of fully supported, world class cycling routes in Moab’s spectacular landscape.  Participants are treated to rolling spins and challenging climbs as they traverse roadways near the Colorado River, Dead Horse Point State Park, and Spanish Valley up to the base of the La Sal Mountains. What is it about the Moab Skinny Tire Festival that attracts roadies from all over? It’s not just the amazing landscape where one’s soul can come out and play, it’s not just the inspirational views that make one feel both empowered and insignificant at the same time. Established as a benefit ride for cancer survivorship programs and research, all donations go into changing the world of cancer. “We’ve had cyclists attending this event since its inception. We’ve shared laughter and tears as we’ve all gone through a cancer experience; we put purpose to our cycling”, said founder Mark Griffith who lost his older brother to cancer.  Cyclists have donated over $6.6 million to cancer survivorship and research programs nationwide including contributions to Moab Regional Hospital’s Infusion Therapy Room.

• Sunday, March 12th, Hwy 128 Colorado River Corridor
• Monday, March 13th, Spanish Valley Drive, Gateway to the La Sals
• Tuesday, March 14th, Hwy 279 River Portal Route

Activities:

Western Dinner at Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge, Banff Mountain Film Festival, Live Music at Festival Celebration, and an all around inspiring time.

Tour de St. George, Spring (Road) – St. George, Utah – April 8, 2017

The Tour de St. George starts in downtown S.G.  The route immediately climbs toward the red rocks and skirts the base of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.  As you keep pedaling, you will dip all the way down to the Arizona Stateline while you make your way toward Sand Hollow and Quail Creek State Parks. The terrain on this challenging course ranges from relatively smooth dirt track to rock and boulder-strewn hills. You’ll twist and turn, climb up and race down as you cover some of the best mountain bike terrain you’ve ever ridden. Being a desert race, visibility is great too.
